Organizational Members of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences agree to submit summary statistics each year of dives, modes of diving and any incidents associated with their program.

Statistics from 1998 to 2007 were analyzed.  Numbers of OMs reporting, number of divers and number of dives all generally increased.  The number of incidents resulting in recompression was 0.45/10,000 dives.  A retrospective review of those incidents and the follow up treatment found that DCI symptoms were often treated conservatively and that the actual rate of DCI was 0.32/10,000 dives.  Results may be found in The Incidence of Decompression Illness in 10 Years of Scientific Diving
