The Avelo System replaces traditional buoyancy control with a smoother, more natural approach, allowing divers to move freely and stay in control underwater. Rather than relying on a BCD air bubble, which is depth-sensitive and can cause unstable buoyancy and uncontrolled ascents, Avelo "borrows" water weight from the ocean, providing stable neutral buoyancy regardless of depth changes. The result is a scuba system nearly half the weight of conventional gear, yet it delivers more bottom time and immediately perfect neutral buoyancy, a combination that earned Avelo the prestigious Innovation Award at boot Düsseldorf 2025. Diving safety professionals attending the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) symposium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography will have the rare opportunity to experience the Avelo System firsthand during a one-day demo event. This setting is ideal for directly evaluating Avelo's safety implications, from eliminating depth-sensitive buoyancy fluctuations to significantly reducing topside gear weight, which can become a safety hazard on unstable boats and during wavy shore entries. While the system provides sophisticated post-dive data insights, it is important to note that the Avelo System remains a completely manual tool. It does not rely on automated buoyancy control, ensuring the diver remains in full, direct command of their profile at all times. In addition, this demo features an in-depth look at how Avelo captures and quantifies the resulting reduction in diver task-loading, providing a level of performance transparency beyond our standard training. Whether you are assessing new equipment standards, training protocols, or diver risk management, this hands-on demo offers a practical look at how Avelo is redefining safe, efficient, and accessible scientific diving.

Description
Join us for an Orientation Dive in an Elk Kelp (Pelagophycus porra) Forest during the 2026 AAUS Symposium. Elk Kelp is the “third” canopy kelp behind bull kelp and giant kelp. Unlike the other two canopy kelps that have very wide distributions, elk kelp only grows in a narrow band from Central Baja California to Southern California. Generally found in deeper waters from 60 to 300 feet, it rarely reaches the surface, so finding forests can be difficult. With its distinctive antler-like branching blades and volleyball-sized pneumocystis, this kelp forms truly unique, lush kelp forest habitats. During each dive, you’ll weave through towering kelp stalks alive with fish, invertebrates, and the quiet magic of a healthy coastal ecosystem.  Two boat dives in Elk Kelp Forests aboard the Humboldt operated by Waterhorse Charters in Mission Bay, San Diego. Expect each dive to be between 60 and 80 feet. In October, the water temp is roughly 60 °F (15 °C). A 7mm wetsuit is recommended. Tanks are included (Steel 85s) and gear rental is available. Nitrox is available for an extra fee. Hot drinks and a light soup lunch is provided. Boarding will begin at 7 AM with boat departure at 8 AM. We will return to the dock by 4PM.

Dreams of a Scientist is a science communication organization that utilizes storytelling to integrate science into your local community and everyday life! We create novel and engaging ways to represent scientists’ journeys and discoveries, like a children’s book called Dreams of a Scientist: Lessons from the Sea, pub postcards that highlight local scientists, and a board game that will share the story of Antarctic scientists. We know that it is easy to say ‘you’ll get more engagement if you make your science into a story’, but actually making the story is easier said than done! In this workshop, we will break down the science of storytelling, and then help you craft stories that will connect the general public, grant agencies, or other scientists to you and your work. By the end of the workshop, you will have a science comic draft, a social media post, a story-centric grant abstract, or the start to a new project idea!

The PSI-PCI Valve Repair Technician (VRT) course is a top notch overview of the basics of valve maintenance and repair.  The valve is often times the most neglected part of the dive equipment. But it has a very important job: getting the air from the cylinder to the user!  Wouldn’t you want your valves to be in the best possible condition?  This is a stand alone course to meet Federal requirements for formal, function specific training.  The PSI-PCI VRT course expands on the informational overview of the VCI course and will provide you with the detailed information you need to disassemble, inspect, clean, reassemble and test the valve.NOTE: This course MUST be registered for at the link below. The PEERS initiative at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography facilitates intensive workshops to promote active bystander intervention with an emphasis on field settings. Bystander intervention is an evidence-based framework intended to shift the burden of addressing harassment from the target to the community. PEERS workshops are field-focused versions of the United States Geological Survey’s (USGS) Step-UP! Employee Empowerment Strategies (SEES) Bystander Intervention Training material developed by scientists to increase peer-to-peer anti-harassment efforts. As with USGS SEES, PEERS workshops aim to: Identify and describe barriers to intervening in difficult situations, Increase attendees motivation to help, Introduce tools and approaches to help attendees safely respond to toxic behavior and situations, and Develop skills among the attendees to safely respond to problematic situations. All workshops include facilitated group discussions of how individuals may decide whether or not to intervene in a given situation and videos illustrating active and inactive bystanders. Participants are asked to take an anonymous survey; the results are shared in real time so participants can see what behaviors their peers have witnessed in work settings. PEERS workshops include discussion of problems specific to remote work settings, group discussion of real world fieldwork scenarios, and discussion of prevention strategies directed at fieldwork. PEERS seeks to promote positive culture change in our field teams and other work environments by growing a community of facilitators and workshop attendees. Strategies and resources discussed in the workshops are meant to empower all field team members to promote prosocial environments by recognizing and safely addressing harmful behaviors and instituting preventative measures.
